Huey Newton Goes to China

Huey Newton (L), a Black Panther Party leader awaiting trial on a voluntary manslaughter charge, arrived here, September 27th, and crossed the border into China shortly after noon. Newton was accompanied by Elaine Brown, Black Panther Minister of Information and Robert Bay, Newton’s personal bodyguard.

Huey Newton Visits China

Black Panther party leader Huey Newton returned late to San Francisco from a visit to China where he said he petitioned Chairman Mao Tse-tung to be chief negotiator to President Nixon, “For the peace and freedom of the oppressed people of the world.” Newton (L), said that he did not actually meet with Mao Tse-tung, but presented his petition to Chinese Premier Chou En-lai.
