Lauren Rorie

Lauren T. Rorie is a doctoral student in the Department of History at Rutgers University, specializing in African American History and Women’s and Gender History. She earned her M.A. in World History from Monmouth University and her B.A. in Africana Studies from Queens College (CUNY). Her research explores the intersection of Black expressive culture and the Black Freedom Movement throughout the twentieth century.

Roller Skating and the Black Freedom Movement

Ledger Smith roller skated 700 miles from Chicago to Washington, D.C. in August 1963 to join the March on Washington. His journey, supported by the NAACP, drew national media attention and was an act of resistance against segregation and racism.
