Wilma Rudolph, A Legendary Tigerbelle
The story of Black women and track and field through the lens of one of the early greats, Wilma Rudolph.
Letisha Engracia Cardoso Brown is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cincinnati, where she is also affiliated with the Africana Studies, and Women’s, Gender, Sexuality Studies Programs. Her recent book, Say Her Name: Centering Black Feminism and Black Women in Sport published by Rutgers University Press in March 2025, highlights the contributions and victories as well as the challenges and trials faced by Black sportswomen. Moreover, her book points the importance of a Black feminist lens within the critical study of sport and society. She is currently working on collaborative projects including one on existence as resistance, as well as a second that focuses on the retired French figure skater Surya Bonaly.
